Papakura Central School Working Bee

Papakura Central School Working BeeĀ

Working Bee #79 at Papakura Central School was one of those days where everything came together. Backed by the incredible support of Foundation North, students, staff, volunteers and the wider school community joined forces to create a brand-new outdoor classroom designed to inspire learning, wellbeing and connection for years to come.

From the early morning briefing, there was a real buzz around the school. Wheelbarrows were loaded, shovels hit the ground, and teams quickly got to work transforming an unused area into a vibrant learning space. The best part? The students weren’t standing on the sidelines. They were right in the middle of the action from start to finish.

Throughout the day, Birdies raised garden beds were assembled and filled, creating a productive growing space ready for vegetables, herbs and hands-on learning. A Morrifield tunnel house was installed to extend growing opportunities throughout the year, while Gary’s Garden Sheds once again delivered one of their fantastic sheds to keep tools and resources organised and accessible. By the end of the day, what had been an empty patch of grass had become a fully functioning outdoor classroom.

What stood out most was the energy of the tamariki. Whether they were moving mulch, filling wheelbarrows, collecting leaves for compost, helping construct garden beds or learning how the different elements of the outdoor classroom worked together, they embraced every opportunity to get involved. The space was being built around them, but more importantly, it was being built with them.

That’s what makes these days so powerful. The infrastructure matters, but it’s the sense of ownership that creates lasting impact. When students help build something with their own hands, they see it differently. They care for it differently. And they use it differently.

As the final tools were packed away and the group gathered for a well-earned photo, there was already a sense that this space would quickly become part of everyday school life. Thanks to the support of Foundation North and the incredible effort of the Papakura Central School community, another outdoor classroom was brought to life, creating new opportunities for tamariki to learn, grow and thrive beyond the four walls of a classroom.
