Papatoetoe North School Working Bee
In May 2021, Oke was approached by Papatoetoe North School to help get their school garden growing, a working bee was planned for September 2021 but then Auckland was hit by a Level 4 lockdown, so the working bee had to be postponed. Alas, we’re not ones to give up on a project and the working bee was rescheduled for Saturday 19th March 2022. It was great to get our first school garden of 2022 built and despite a damp start to the day, it was another awesome build. For the first time, Oke built and installed Birdies Raised Beds and implemented the hugelkultur method of filling the beds (the bottom half of the beds are filled with logs, branches, leaves, etc., and then Daltons garden mix on top). A total of fifteen raised beds were installed, along with the tunnel house, tool shed and a dozen fruit trees were planted.
We also welcomed Paku on board, which will help inspire kids to understand and use the traditional agricultural tools used in Aotearoa.
This was school garden #21 and we look forward to seeing it grow 🙂
