Working Bee #82 took us to St Joseph’s School Ōtāhuhu on Tuesday 25 August, where volunteers from Auckland Airport joined the Oke team to create a new outdoor classroom. Funded by Foundation North, the project has given the school a dedicated space where tamariki can grow food, learn outdoors and connect with nature.
The transformation included installing eight new Birdies raised garden beds, filling them with fresh growing mix and building a new tunnel house (inc shelving) plus adding a new garden shed to store the school’s tools and equipment. What had been an underused area was turned into a practical growing space ready for the school community to make its own.
The Auckland Airport volunteers got properly stuck in, assembling garden beds, shifting soil and helping bring the whole space together. Although the students couldn’t join us on the day, the result is a garden they can now fill with plants, learning and plenty of muddy hands.
By the end of the day, St Joseph’s had a brand-new outdoor classroom ready to grow.
